Advertising Network

In February 2008, The Media Consortium hired the consulting firm Marketechnique to explore opportunities for building an online advertising network for progressive media outlets. Marketechnique and Media Consortium staff interviewed ten members about their current advertising platforms, needs, and revenue opportunities. The Media Consortium also surveyed its membership network to assess the interest and viability of forming an online advertising network. The responses were overwhelmingly positive from a statistical standpoint and indicate a considerable audience reach:

  • 26 organizations have a total of 4,549,753 unique visitors and 55,776,186 pageviews per month.
  • 24 organizations have email products that go out approximately once a week, reaching around 1,002,671 names.

Marketechnique also surveyed the larger online advertising space and evaluated the viability of a Media Consortium ad network and the resources needed to build it.

Armed with this information, we determined that there is a potentially significant opportunity for Media Consortium members to coordinate and expand their advertising-revenue generating opportunities. Media Consortium members AlterNet, Air America, Mother Jones and The Nation came together as the founding outlets for a progressive media ad network.
